Auto Insurance Information
Auto insurance protects you from financial loss if you’re in an accident or your car is stolen. It’s a contract: you pay a premium, and the insurance company agrees to cover certain losses as defined in your policy.
What does auto insurance cover?
Auto insurance typically provides three main protections:
-
Property coverage: pays for damage to or theft of your vehicle.
-
Liability coverage: covers your legal responsibility if you cause injury or property damage to others.
-
Medical coverage: helps pay for medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages, and in some cases, funeral expenses.
A policy may include six types of coverage, and while most states (including Florida) require some, lenders may also set additional requirements if you’re financing your car.
Most auto policies last six months or a year. Your insurance company will notify you when it’s time to renew and pay your premium.
Why do you need auto insurance?
Auto insurance is about protecting yourself financially:
-
Car repairs or replacement after an accident or theft can be costly.
-
Medical bills for you or your passengers can add up quickly.
-
Liability costs if you’re responsible for injuries or damages can lead to lawsuits.
-
Florida law requires you to carry at least Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) coverage.
